Season’s greetings! Just try to get sthg delivered in the season. Although a peak in demand for freight transportation is pretty predictable (hey, as in “Dinner for One“, it’s the same procedure every year), surprisingly few transportation companies have discovered that they couldn’t just work on their capacities, but also manage demand. And it’s not only transportation companies, even toy manufacturers manage not to manage their peaks… Santa’s supply chain seems to be a headache even for Wal-Mart. Not sure how poems will help in this case. And who would want to have such a demanding but 2-night only employment?
At least our toys from China are already well on their way. (Let’s just hope we won’t have to send them back.) But most people (not excluding myself) haven’t even thought of what to get as presents, never mind the X-mas songs that pester us in all stores since mid-October. A nicely fresh approach is thus the one of the Finnish post office – sending each household a reminder that season’s greetings will be delivered on time if posted before Dec 14. Demand management, here we go

PS. Have you realised SC can stand for both “Santa Claus” and “supply chain”? Greetings from Santa’s own country
(for the case you ever had doubts as to where Santa comes from, have a look at Mauri Kunnas’ Santa Claus… Or the new movie on the topic.)
