2010 ABS list out now

Whereas the google citation analysis allows analysis of particular articles, the 2010 ABS Academic Journal Guide ranks academic journals in various management and business disciplines. Among the changes from last year is IJPDLM moving up by one category – well done!

Google citation analysis

What is your university going for, subjective rankings or “objective” citation analysis? Here comes citation analysis quick and dirty – an advanced search in google scholar. Type in a name and you get the most cited article of a person, type in a journal and you get the most cited articles of the journal. Contrary to ISI ratings, this is not confined to the journals that have been rated already but does also not give you a “fixed” rate (NB! even ISI ratings change every year).

Let’s run it for some random journals. The most cited articles of all times (all times google, that is) are

- for IJOPM: Neely et al. (1995): “Performance measurement systems design” (cited 776 times to date)

- for IJPE: Beamon (1998): “Supply chain design and analysis: models and methods (cited 712 times to date)

- for JOM: Flynn et al. (1994): “A framework for quality management research and associated measurement instrument (cited 648 times to date)

- for JBL: Mentzer et al. (2001): “Defining supply chain management” (cited 556 times)

- for IJPDLM: Spekman et al. (1998)’s “An empirical investigation into supply chain management” (cited 399 times, though notably a reprint from SCM:IJ)

- for IJLM: Lambert et al. (1996): “Developing and implementing supply chain partnerships” (252 times)

- for SCM:IJ: Cox (1999): “Power, value and supply chain management” (223)

- for JSCM: Zsidisin (2003): “Managerial perceptions of supply risk” (188)

Yes, this is a convenience sample but it is fun :-) – and the technique may be helpful in identifying the articles one should definitely not miss on a particular topic.

Green and healthy supply chains

Trendspotting on our CFP wall points again at two current focal themes of research, “green supply chain management” and “health care supply chains”. Here’s a more focused assembly of the CFPs.

Green supply chain management: Mar 31 is the deadline of two calls for papers on this topic (sustainability with a call on “Supply chain sustainability“ and Transportation Research Part E on “Green supply chain management“). It then follows with a CFP for the African Journal of Economic and Management Studies on “CSR in Africa“ (Jun 30), and another for the Journal of Cleaner Production on “Sustainability management beyond corporate boundaries“ (Aug 31). The International Journal of Production Economics has two at almost the same time, “Green manufacturing and distribution in the fashion and apparel industries“ (Sep 30) and “Sustainable development of manufacturing and services“ (Oct 30). Timely enough, the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management dedicated its first two numbers of 2010 to sustainability in supply chains. Now even marketing journals are waking up for the topic, see e.g. the Journal of Marketing Management CFP on “Re-visiting contemporary issues in green/ethical marketing” (due in a year, Mar 1, 2011).

Health care operations and SCM: Apr 6 is the first deadline to note here, with a CFP for the European Journal of Operational Research on “Operations research in health care“. One can also note the Annals of Operations Research calls for papers on “OR in the public sector and NPO“ (Apr 30), OR Spectrum’s CFP on “Healthcare operations management“ (Jun 30), as well as CFPs for Decision Support Systems on “Modeling for better healthcare“ (Sep 15), Computers and Operations Research on “Operations research for health care delivery“ (Dec 2010). It is mostly OR and OM research that is called for in health care right now.

Now: ICIL 2010

ICIL gathers a renown but very small crowd on the topic of “industrial logistics” – as to say, mostly OR. The format is sthg to be worked on but the topics are very wide spread. Next time again in 2012 in Croatia.

PS Relevant CFPs for industrial logisticians can be found on the ICIIL blog.

IJPDLM seeking new editor(s)

We hate to see Mike Crum and Dick Poist go, but now the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, the oldest (40 years) and one of the most prestigious journals in logistics and supply chain management, is seeking new editors. Nominations and applications are to be sent to Lucy Sootheran.

New journal: Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Humanitarian logistics research now has a new, dedicated outlet: the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The first call for papers can be accessed here – and the first number is scheduled to come out in early 2011.
